One might logically assume that because it’s colder in the winter and you spend less time outdoors, that wearing sunscreen isn’t something to be worried about. Surprisingly, the sun is actually closer to the earth during the winter, and its damaging rays are more powerful. Though you may be outside less, your face and hands are still exposed to the sun. You may feel lulled into a false sense of security when you’re indoors, but windows only block a small portion of the ultra-violet rays that fade your couch and art, and cause aging and cancer. Here are some tips to keep in mind when considering your sunscreen use:

  • Choose a product that protects against UVA and UVB rays (broad spectrum). Read the bottle carefully, as many sunscreens only protect against UVB rays. Dermatologists recommend a minimum of SPF 15.
  • Make it part of your morning routine. Most dermatologists point out that people experience skin damage on the left side of their face, neck, arm and hand as a result of exposure from driving.
  • Your face and body have different needs. Invest in a quality sunscreen designed just for your face; make sure it is non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores). Its formula is lighter and fast-absorbing, so you won’t feel like a greased-up beach baby.
  • If you’re going to go out and play in the snow, especially in higher elevations, you actually need to boost your protection factor to at least SPF 30, because the snow reflects another 80% of the ultra-violet rays back onto your skin.
  • If you’re flying anywhere, make sure you bring a small bottle of SPF 30 in your carry-on. The closer to the sun you are, the higher the level of exposure to UV rays. Slather on face, neck, and the backs of your hands liberally before you board the plane.
  • Don’t forget the men in your life! Most sunscreen products, especially for your face, are geared towards women consumers because we comprise most of the market for skin products. However, men are at the same or even greater risk of skin damage and cancer, especially if they are responsible for clearing the driveway and sidewalks, go hunting, or work outside.
  • While we’re talking family members, don’t forget the children! They also ride in cars, work in sunny classrooms, and play outside. Their skin tends to dry out in the winter time anyways, so remember to cover their sweet little faces every morning. The extra moisture will help keep their cheeks from getting chapped!
  • Lips! You can pick up a Chapstick with plenty of SPF in the checkout aisle at the grocery store. Grab a few while you’re at it! They usually cost about a dollar, and you will help keep your lips from getting wrinkly from sun damage, and chapped from cold winds.

Remember, while you’re covering your body, feet, hands and head with fluffy warm clothing, you need to cover your skin all winter as well!
