If you travel outside of the United States and Canada and want to rent an automobile, you'll need to take special consideration when it comes to insurance.
Your personal automobile policy in the United States most likely will not respond, as coverage is typically confined to the U.S. and Canada. However, there are other options available to you as you travel.
Many credit card companies offer certain types of physical damage coverage when using their credit card to rent an automobile from a national or international car rental agency. You should check with your credit card company to get the written details of what, if any, coverage is provided. However, the coverage offered through credit card companies usually will not provide liability protection.
For liability protection, most renters rely on the liability coverage provided by the car rental agency. However, this is usually the minimum required by law in the country where you're renting the automobile. These coverage restrictions can also severely limit your protection. There are a few internationally-based automobile liability insurers who will write higher liability limits over and above the basic purchased from the car rental agency.
